Discovering … Ephesus and the Letter

To find a demonstration of the mighty effect of the gospel of God, one can certainly be found at Ephesus. The gospel is a gospel of salvation, it builds up, it gives assurance—people notice things like that. It was clearly noticed in Ephesus and all of Asia.

Ephesus was a city filled with amazing things from an earthly point of view. Now, even its once reknowned “wonder of the ancient world”—the temple of Diana [Artemis]—lies in ruins. The great Library of Celsus, with that wondrous collection of men’s words, did not stand. God’s word has and will always stand. One of the first century artisans and citizens, Demitrius, noticed that things were different when God’s word was presented.

What can we learn from a study of these people, the letter to them, and its context? We see the things of the world will wither, but the effect of the gospel of God is mighty and lasting.
